Periodontics

Dental lasers play an important role in periodontics, offering rapid, efficient treatments for conditions such as periodontitis, peri-implantitis, crown lengthening, gingivoplasty, gum depigmentation and more. Fotona’s dual-wavelength Er:YAG and Nd:YAG dental lasers are ideal for a wide range of minimally invasive, cost-effective periodontal procedures, which create the optimal conditions for healing periodontal tissues. What’s more, lasers assist in preventing infection and promoting the reduction of pocket depths. Combining the dual-wavelength Er:YAG and Nd:YAG, they can dramatically improve the outcome of laser-assisted treatments, guaranteeing maximum safety and efficacy.

Periodontal treatments can be optimised due to the unique laser-tissue interaction characteristics of both the Er:YAG and the Nd:YAG laser wavelengths. Superior results can be achieved for coagulation and deep disinfection when using the Nd:YAG laser energy, while Er:YAG’s unique characteristics can efficient at gently remove the infected surface tissue and calculus from the root surface. When combined, they can dramatically improve the outcome of laser-assisted treatments, guaranteeing maximum safety and efficacy.

Laser periodontics utilises light energy to address gum and bone issues affecting teeth. Nd:YAG wavelength removes diseased epithelial lining of the periodontal pockets and improves access to the root surface. Er:YAG wavelength removes the microbial biofilm, tartar, plaque and calculus, from the root surfaces. The Nd:YAG wavelength is then used to coagulate and promote the formation of a stable fibrin clot. Laser treatment eliminates bacteria, stimulates stem cells, and promotes gum healing and reattachment.

The ideal management of peri-implant diseases focuses on infection control, detoxification of implant surfaces, regeneration of lost tissues, and plaque-control regimens. The Er:YAG laser is used to remove microbial composition on the implant without damaging it and to treat the damaged alveolar bone around the implant. Following Er:YAG treatment, the Nd:YAG is used for bacterial reduction and biostimulation. Inflammation, swelling, and bleeding of soft-tissue lesions, which may lead to bone loss, can be handled without surgery, and healthy peri-implant tissue assures greater long-term implant success.

OUTPERFORM, OUTSHINE, OUTLAST

TwinLight® uses two complementary laser wavelengths to improve the outcome of laser- assisted periodontal treatment:

  • Er:YAG for precise cleaning of hard-to-reach areas. Targets the hard tissues, such as the root surface of the tooth, to gently remove biofilm, calculus and contaminated cementum
  • Nd:YAG for disinfection and bleeding control. Used for the soft tissues, this laser effectively targets and removes diseased periodontal tissue, disinfects the pocket by reducing bacterial load and provides superior coagulation

TwinLight® peri-implantitis treatment:

  • Er:YAG is used to clean the implant surface without altering or damaging the implant
  • Nd:YAG is used to disinfect the bone and control bleeding

Crown lengthening

  • Using open or closed flap procedure, the laser provides superior precision
  • A closed-flap laser procedure is less traumatic to gingival tissues, reduces overall treatment time, and allows for precise cutting and tissue ablation with minimal collateral effects
  • The laser enables a wide range of periodontal tissue modification – from gingivoplasty and gingivectomy to bone contouring and reduction
  • Laser treatments provide good haemostatic properties enabling practitioners to perform multiple treatments in just one visit, turning your laser into a cost-effective investment

Post-extraction socket preservation

  • Lasers provide a safe and effective method which can improve rehabilitation of the alveolar post-extraction which is important for implant placement
  • Fotona LightWalker® provides a superior method for degranulation, disinfection, bleeding stimulation, clot stabilization, de-epithelialization of the surrounding tissue and photobiomodulation

Frenulotomy/Frenectomy

  • Frenulotomies and frenectomies carried out by a dental laser are relatively quick, more comfortable, heal quicker where bleeding is minimised
  • When using laser the need for anesthesia is reduced as comfort is improved. The laser creates a clean wound where the need for suturing is also reduced, and the risk of infection improved, leading to reduced chair time and fewer visits

De-epithelialization

  • Dental lasers provide a convenient and very precise process of graft de-epithelialization. Guided soft-tissue management gives more control over the healing process leading to more aesthetic gingival appearance

Desensitization

  • Laser treatment achieves recrystallization of dentin, producing a nonporous surface that partially or totally obliviates dentinal tubules and affects the neural transmission through coagulation of proteins in the dentinal fluid and hence reduces permeability and blocks fluid movement
  • The laser-assisted treatment of dentine hypersensitivity compared to conventional desensitizing treatment leads to rapid results with shorter treatment time, increased comfort for the patient and longer lasting results

Gum depigmentation

  • A precise procedure allowing the periodontist to treat only the pigmented areas without damaging surrounding healthy tissue
  • The procedure is less invasive than traditional methods, such as surgical excision.

FAQ’S

Using laser for periodontics is a painless, non-invasive alternative to surgery, offering benefits like reduced swelling, reduced bleeding, less pain, and faster healing. It precisely targets problem areas without the need for general anaesthesia, improves gum appearance, stimulates tissue growth, and ensures safe, comfortable procedures with minimal post-operative discomfort.

  • They provide a good surface for reattachment – micro roughness
  • Reduced need for open flap surgery, leading to a higher treatment acceptance rate
  • Enables guided soft-tissue reattachment by de-epithelialization of surrounding tissue
  • More comfortable for the patient and operator – less force applied
  • Patient satisfaction and increased referrals from practitioners and patients

Yes, through ComfortLase™ photobiomodulation (PBM) treatment, a clinically proven, non-invasive solution used for a wide variety of wound healing and pain management applications. PBM utilizes low-level, visible-red to near-infrared light energy, which stimulates cells to naturally heal, relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Additionally, the process results in accelerated tissue regeneration, stimulation of cell metabolism, increased lymphatic flow and stimulation of micro-circulation.
