Endodontics

Endodontics, a specialised field of dentistry, focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing dental issues linked to the pulp of the tooth – the innermost part containing blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues. Its primary objective is to salvage teeth affected by deep-seated damage or infection, typically involving the removal of infected or inflamed pulp, thorough cleaning, disinfection, and sealing to prevent further problems. Root canal therapy is a common endodontic procedure, alleviating pain, and averting tooth extraction, often necessary for severe decay, abscesses, cracked teeth, or root damage from trauma. Neglected, these conditions lead to pain, swelling, and tooth loss.

Laser technology in endodontics presents numerous advantages, excelling in disinfection by eliminating deep-rooted bacteria and pathogens. Laser-assisted procedures are less painful due to nerve cauterisation, leading to faster healing. Laser precision minimises damage to healthy tissue while enhancing debris removal and sterilisation.

Using lasers in endodontics enables smaller incisions and enhanced haemostasis, making treatments more comfortable, faster, and more effective. This approach aligns with the goal of preserving natural teeth and long-term oral health, offering benefits like single-visit root canals, tooth structure preservation, treatment of both hard and soft tissues, minimal bleeding, precise bacteria targeting, reduced pain with fewer needle injections, and less post-procedure discomfort.

Join the growing community of Endodontists who have discovered the Gold Standard of irrigation and disinfection of root canals. Laser assisted irrigation, using Fotona SWEEPS® is like no other and is taking the endodontic profession to a new standard not previously attainable. By using synchronised pairs of ultra-short pulses, an accelerated collapse of laser-induced bubbles is achieved, leading to extremely clean canals, sub canals and dentinal tubules free of smear layers, even inside the narrowest root canals.

Dental lasers prove to be a fast, easy, and highly effective tool for treating root canal infections, offering a patient-friendly alternative to traditional techniques. The overarching goal of endodontics remains preserving natural teeth and ensuring long-term oral health.

Dental lasers are proven to be an ideal tool for fast, easy-to-perform, and extremely effective treatment of root-canal infections, and a patient-friendly alternative to conventional techniques.

A major disadvantage of classical chemo-mechanical treatment procedures is the inability to completely clean, debride and disinfect anatomically complex root canal systems. Another problem in endodontics is the non-turbulent fluid dynamics of irrigants in the confined canal space, which hinders deep penetration of the irrigant. SWEEPS (Shock Wave Enhanced Emission Photoacoustic Streaming) combines principles of shock wave generation and photoacoustic effects to enhance the cleaning and disinfection of root canals during endodontic treatments. The technology offers several benefits:

SWEEPS
Utilizes non thermal photoacoustic shock waves to create rapid pressure changes within the canal system. This action can help dislodge debris and biofilm more effectively than traditional methods.

Photoacoustic Effect
The laser is used to generate acoustic waves enhancing the flow of irrigants and allowing the irrigant to reach into lateral canals and dentinal tubules to deeply disinfect the root canal system by removing pulp tissue, debris, smear layer, and biofilm containing microorganisms.

Enhanced Fluid Dynamics
SWEEPS improves the movement of fluids within the canal, allowing for increased penetration of disinfectants and cleaning solutions, leading to more thorough treatment.

Pulp Chamber Positioning
The laser emitting fiber-tip is positioned in the pulp chamber, at a safe distance from the apical terminus. This position permits simultaneous irrigation in all of the endodontic geometry independently of the root canal anatomy and without the risk of apical extrusion.

Patient Safety
A minimally invasive procedure which reduces risks such as ongoing infections, instrument breakage, apical extrusion or perforations.

Consistent Results
Success rate in complex root structures is enhanced and predictability is improved, optimising results for each patient that is treated. Consistency and predictability of results allows for efficient procedures.

Reduced Treatment Times
Efficient procedures and reduced treatment duration translates to quicker recovery and fewer necessary follow-up appointments for patients enhancing ROI potential.

FAQ’S

PIPs technology, the predecessor to SWEEPS technology was introduced over 15 years ago. Since that time, there have been hundreds of scientific and clinical research papers on LAI (Laser Assisted Irrigation) techniques which have led to SWEEPS technology. SWEEPS technology has been rigorously researched and is widely accepted as delivering the highest possible laser-activated irrigation efficacy.
SWEEPS technology is a patented solution developed by Fotona d.o.o. This technology is available on the Fotona LightWalker and SkyPulse series of dental laser product lines.
All Fotona lasers are manufactured in Slovenia.

Fotona has been producing medical lasers since 1964, whilst laser technology was only invented 4 years earlier in 1960. Fotona is fully committed to stringent testing of all components and in-house production of its medical and dental laser systems. The company has one of the most highly educated workforces in the industry, with an exceptionally high number of employees with PhD’s specializing in laser and medical technology.

SSP and SWEEPS® Endodontic Laser Treatment

  • The SSP (Super Short Pulses) irrigation uses the Er:YAG laser to create non-thermal photoacoustic waves within the cleaning debriding solutions introduced in the canal. Following this photoacoustic treatment, the canals and sub canals are left clean, and the dental tubules are free of a smear layer.
  • The SWEEPS (Shock Wave Enhanced Emission Photo-acoustic Streaming) Er:YAG laser modality additionally improved the irrigation and disinfecting efficacy of laser endodontics. By using synchronised pairs of ultra-short pulses, an accelerated collapse of laser-induced bubbles is achieved, leading to enhanced shockwave emission even inside the narrowest root canals.
